Introduction to MGPS
A clear, beginner-friendly introduction to medical gas pipeline systems — ideal for new starters or teams who need awareness rather than full AP/CP responsibilities. Learn the basics of plant and distribution, common risks, alarms, isolations and safe behaviours around MGPS.

Course Format
-
Duration: 1 day
-
Delivery Options:
-
On-site training tailored to your team’s needs
-
-
Class Size: Typically 1–12 delegates

This course is designed to be engaging, approachable and immediately applicable for attendees with little or no prior MGPS experience.

Course Content (Can be made bespoke dependant on role)
The Introduction to MGPS course covers essential concepts that help delegates understand how medical gases are delivered, managed and monitored in clinical environments, including:

-
What medical gases and vacuum are used for in healthcare, and why safety is critical
-
Core hazards of compressed and cryogenic gases
-
Gas identification: cylinder colours, labels, line markers and outlet/connection compatibility
-
Cylinder lifecycle basics: receipt checks, storage standards, handling/transport, and preparation for use
-
Safe cylinder operation: fitting regulators/flowmeters, opening/closing valves, and leak awareness
-
Introduction to MGPS: how piped systems work (sources/plant, distribution, AVSUs/LVAs, terminal units)
-
Pipeline safety essentials: pressure risks, isolating valves, basic fire precautions and oxygen safety
-
Alarm awareness: plant/area alarm purpose, what to do on alarm activation, and who to contact
-
Basic principals of design
-
Emergency supplies: reserve cylinders/manifolds and basic user actions
-
Safe use of pipeline-connected equipment
-
Permit-to-work awareness: why it exists, what “unauthorised work” looks like
-
Gas conservation: practical behaviours that reduce waste without compromising care
-
Practical exercises: gas ID and labelling checks, safe cylinder handling/setup, simple alarm-response scenarios, and basic emergency/backfeed kit monitoring awareness (as applicable)

The course uses clear explanations and examples to make complex concepts understandable even for non-technical attendees.

Assessment & Certification
To confirm understanding of the core awareness outcomes:

-
Assessment Format: Guided knowledge check (discussion and short review)

Delegates who complete the training receive a Certificate of Introduction to Medical Gas Pipeline Systems but this is not a HTM02-01 course.
